Drawings?

What is the difference between drawing ang painting? A line is a mark made by an artist with a tool or instrument. Just because a line is of a particular color not found in the gray scale, does it become a painting? And can a line be made with paint? And can a drawing be part painting, part drawing, or does that make it a painting? The original series of works by the artist Terry Hart (below) are simply entitled "Drawings In Space" and are not intended to answer any of the preceeding questions.

"I paint “drawings” in space superimposed
over paintings of imaginary maps. Maps,
because they would seem to be
associated with some universal truth,
are painstakingly accurate versions of
perimeters and boundaries that we
create. But, paradoxically,  they are
actually something that constantly
changes as time goes on, analogous
to the considering of truth as it changes
because of time, perspective and
interpretation.
The major intent of my
efforts in art for the last two to three
decades has been to increase the
public awareness and appreciation of
new and different art forms.

As an art advocate I have operated several
contemporary art galleries since the
late 70’s, taught art and manufactured
and exhibited art as a product. As an
instructor of art, my modus operandi
has been simply to instill the enjoyment
of creating art forms in those that I come
into contact with."

Erroneous Conclusions, acrylic on linen

"I was employed as a drafter, revising maps for several
years after earning my BFA in studio art. In many ways
the experience still motivates me. My “drawings” in
space (paintings) never make sense. They are
conundrums asking to be solved, that add an element
of mystery to my compositions. By superimposing
something that makes little sense over another thing
that might not be true and accurate in a few short years,
I am sending a message, perhaps about the fragility of
the human condition or pondering questions of what
we humans consider to be true.  The paintings are visual
sponge activities that open dialogues to more impending
questions like, “What is art?” and “Why do we think that
this is our planet to destroy, anyway?”
"As an artist, I have branched out into the
production of 4-dimensional paintings and
sculpture and recently have obsessed on
multi-media presentation formats focusing
on musical compositions, recorded and
produced by the computer. I have been
very interested in the 2-D representation of
a 4th dimension (time, and then sound also)
in my latest body of work. My recent paintings
support this, and the 15 or so sound
sculptures (audio CDs) that I have recorded
in the past five years are pleasant additions to
my 2-D work."
